Round 2 - AMA EnduroCross Series - September 16, 2018

COSTA MESA, Calif. – FMF KTM Factory Racing teammates Cody Webb and Kacy Martinez scored a pair of podium finishes on Saturday in front of a sold out crowd for Round 2 of the 2018 AMA EnduroCross Series in Costa Mesa, California.

Webb started off the day on a positive note as he claimed the fastest hot lap time of the qualifying session. The three-time Super EnduroCross Champion kept the momentum rolling with a heat race victory, picking up an extra championship point in the process. Webb battled his way through the head-to-head bracket races, where he faced Colton Haaker in the final showdown. In a close battle, Webb ultimately finished second in the bracket races to claim the number two gate pick for the Super EnduroCross Main Event.

As the gate dropped for the Main Event, Webb quickly powered his way to a second-place start, making a pass into the lead by lap two. Setting a quick pace early on, Webb charged his way to a five-second lead after six laps before engaging in battle once again with Haaker, who would eventually surpass Webb for the lead on lap 11. Webb continued to charge through the second half of the race where he looked to have the second-place position wrapped up. However, he went down in the rock section on the final lap and lost one position to ultimately finish third in the Main Event.

Webb: “It was great to race in front of a sold-out crowd in Costa Mesa, in the heart of the motorcycle industry. I had a good start to the race and was carrying a good pace, but just didn’t have it in me to charge that hard for the whole main. I was content to finish on the podium and am excited to rebound in Reno.”

In the Women’s Main Event, Martinez got off to a great start as she put herself into the lead on the opening lap. On the second lap, Martinez made a new line selection going into the rock section, which allowed KTM-mounted rider Shelby Turner to take over the lead. Martinez fought back with the fastest lap of the race on lap five and she was able to make up substantial time on the leader. Despite a late-in-the-race charge, Martinez ultimately ran out of time in the six-lap race, finishing second for the day.

Martinez: “Coming into the night show, I was feeling good and confident with my lines. I got a good jump off the line and came into the first turn leading and halfway through the last lap, I switched up my line going into the rocks and it wasn't a good choice. I went to second and made another mistake in the matrix and lost a ton of time. From there, I focused on my lines and rode a lot better, catching first-place but I ended up running out of time to make anything happen.”
