KTM Racing Team rookie Regan Duffy has successfully retained the championship-leading red plate after an action-packed second round of the 2021 ProMX Championship at Canberra, ACT, on Sunday.
Better known as a sand specialist of sorts, Duffy thrived on the rutted, hard-pack Canberra circuit to finish third in the premier MX1 class, completing each of the three races within the top five.

After posting an impressive fourth-fastest time in qualifying, the 18-year-old started strongly in the opening race, working his KTM 450 SX-F past several title contenders and narrowly finishing third to defending champion Todd Waters.

This weekend saw the introduction of a new back-to-back moto format for the second and third races of the day, but the Western Australian teenager took the shorter, sharp races in his stride, with strong results in both outings.

In part one of the second moto this afternoon, Duffy was the second racer through the first turn and latched onto the leader, staying within striking distance for most of the race on his way to an impressive second-place result.

When the gate dropped for the final time in part two, Duffy again proved his strength as a fast-starter, rounding the first turn in third place. Midway through he relinquished that position, but continued to hold his own on his way to fourth.

Those results placed him third overall on the day, making it back-to-back podiums. Duffy now has a seven-point advantage will continue to carry the series lead into round three of the ProMX Championship at Gillman, SA, on 30 May.

Regan Duffy: "Today was good, but I’m a bit disappointed that I didn’t win, as that’s what I train for and that’s what we came here to do. However, you can’t go wrong with a podium and I’ve still got the red plate, so I’m stoked with that! I feel I made a lot of improvements in my riding on hard-pack surfaces, so that’s another positive to take away. A lot of rookies come out firing, get the red plate, then lose it straight away, so I made it a point to myself that I’m going to try and keep it. I had a consistent day and finished top five in all my motos, so I want to continue that through the year. Today I tried hard to get good starts and battle up front, so it's been a solid day."
