Aaron Wright crowned 2016 RC Cup champion at Cadwell Park

The 2016 Santander Consumer Finance KTM British Junior Cup has been won by Aaron Wright this past Bank Holiday weekend (September 28-29) at Cadwell Park.

After finishing eighth in the 2015 series, the 15-year old riding bike no.7 has been the dominant force this season. After winning the opening four races at Silverstone and Oulton Park, Wright, from Newtownabbey, N. Ireland, then had to bounce back from missing the three races of the third round at Brands Hatch due to breaking his wrist in a practice fall. He returned in stunning form to win the next five heats that he finished at Knockhill and Snetterton, backing that up with a fine second place and another win at Brands Hatch in August.

Despite Cadwell Park being the venue where he would be crowned champion, the schoolboy suffered his most challenging round of the season at the Lincolnshire venue. After qualifying his KTM RC 390 in second behind an on-form Jack Nixon, Wright made a poor start in Saturday’s opening race and had to battle from well down the field. Having got back into a podium position, he crashed out on the second to last lap meaning the championship was still undecided while Nixon went on to take a well deserved debut win.

A dramatic second Santander Consumer Finance KTM British Junior Cup race on Sunday saw a race long battle between Wright and Connor Thomson. After Aaron was able to edge away from Thomson on the final lap, a mistake on the penultimate corner saw the no.7 run off track and slip back to fourth, gifting his adversary the win. Joining Connor on the podium was Myles Wasley in second and Jack Nixon third. Finishing fourth however was enough to secure Wright the Championship title, with three races remaining.

Aaron Wright: “It’s not been a great weekend results wise, but we got the job done with the championship. It hasn’t really sunk in yet, but it’s been an amazing year. Missing the three Brands Hatch races with the wrist injury was a real low point, but coming back to win the next three races put me right back in the title hunt.

“The KTM RC Cup has helped me as a rider and has definitely got my name out there and around the paddock to create some interesting opportunities for next year. I can’t thank everyone involved with the series enough and all my family, friends and supporters. I will tackle the next three races at Donington Park in my usual way and then it's on to the RC Cup World Final in Assen. I can’t wait!”

The final round of the 2016 Santander Consumer Finance KTM British Junior Cup takes place at Donington Park on September 16-18.
