Round 5 - MotoAmerica Junior Cup - July 22, 2018

GRANTSVILLE, Utah – It was a constructive weekend in Utah for the KTM Orange Brigade Road Racing Team, who emerged from Round 5 of the MotoAmerica Junior Cup with a pair of podium finishes and solid points toward the championship chase. With a Race 1 victory and a podium finish in Race 2, series points leader Alex Dumas extended his lead to 48 after a pair of consistent rides at Utah Motorsports Camp. His teammate, Sean Ungvarsky, battled back from a Race 1 crash to collect valuable points in Sunday’s Race 2.

Dumas started the weekend off strong by claiming provisional pole on Friday afternoon and finalized his claim to the pole position on Saturday morning. He got a good start in Saturday’s Race 1 and found himself in a four-way battle for the lead. Showing great poise, Dumas maintained a consistent pace to assume the lead on lap five and he held his lead for the remainder of the race to claim his sixth win of the season. Meanwhile, Ungvarsky got off to a good start and was making steady progress before he encountered a race-ending crash on lap four.

In Race 2, Dumas got another good start and engaged in a multi-rider battle for the lead once again. He led the pack early on but was unable to maintain the lead as the race wore on, dropping two positions to ultimately finish third in Race 2. Ungvarsky started outside the top-ten and worked his way up to eighth on lap seven. Unfortunately, Sean mistakenly thought he saw a red flag come out on lap eight and he slowed down before realizing his misjudgment. He regathered himself and brought his KTM RC 390 R home in 12th place. Despite the tough weekend, Ungvarsky maintains third in the championship standings.

Alex Dumas / #23

“This weekend went really well. My KTM RC 390 R was working well from the start of the weekend. Practice went well and I was almost a second faster than the next rider. We made some changes before Race 1 and I was able to win my sixth race of the season. I had the same strong pace in the Sunday morning warm-up session, but I was a second off my warm-up pace during Race 2. I was still able to score a podium and finish the weekend strong. I am looking forward to the next race at Sonoma. I raced there last year and I like that track.”

Sean Ungvarsky / #48

“Well, I’d like to be more inspirational but this was probably my toughest weekend of the season. We kept grinding through the weekend’s struggles and were able to salvage some important points in Race 2. I am looking forward to the next round at Sonoma Raceway. I have never raced there but the hilly layout of the track looks to be a great fit with my riding style.”

Chris Fillmore / Team Manager

“It was a good weekend for the Orange Brigade Team at Utah Motorsports Campus. We’re proud of both riders for pushing through the challenges and coming away with solid points toward the overall championship. Alex was a little under the weather at the start of the weekend but persevered through it. He rode smart, showed maturity on-track and extended his championship points lead. Sean had a tough weekend but he’s a strong competitor and will move on from this weekend’s setbacks. We’re looking forward to the next round at Sonoma Raceway.”

The MotoAmerica Junior Cup will next compete at the Championship of Sonoma at Sonoma Raceway Aug. 10-12.
