Round 4 - AMA Big 6 GP Series - April 8, 2018

TWENTY NINE PALMS, Calif. – Kacy Martinez and the FMF KTM Factory Racing Team took on Round 4 of the 2018 AMA Big 6 Grand Prix Series on Saturday for what proved to be a very fast and challenging race in Southern California. Martinez put on an impressive last-lap charge to capture a hard-fought second-place in the WCGP Women’s Pro class, while KTM-supported rider Brandy Richards led all seven laps to earn her third victory of the season.

The Hilltoppers GP is deemed the fastest track of the series and it lived up to its reputation on Saturday. Located near Joshua Tree National Park, the event saw plenty of sunshine and temperatures in the 90s, making for an extremely dry and dusty day of racing. Off the start, Martinez got a great jump aboard her KTM 250 XC-F and went into the first turn side-by-side with two other riders as she engaged in battle for the second-place position on the opening lap. As a proven champion in more technical disciplines of racing such as AMA National Enduro and GNCC Racing, Martinez struggled with the high-speed sections early on, which caused her to drop back to fourth place. Martinez soon found her flow and began to charge toward the podium about halfway through the nearly two-hour race. Martinez only got stronger as the race wore on and by the final lap she had put herself into a favorable position to battle for second-place.

With less than one-mile until the finish, Martinez made a pass to overtake second and she maintained a steady pace all the way to the finish.

Martinez: “I got a good jump off the start but right off the bat, I didn’t feel the best with the really fast track. I was getting a bit disappointed and fell back to fourth but I put my head down and started feeling way better with the track and on the bike and was able to make a last lap pass for second. I’m happy to come away from this race healthy, as I felt it’s been the sketchiest race I’ve ever done!”

FMF KTM Factory Racing’s Kailub Russell missed this round due to a schedule conflict with Round 4 of the AMA Grand National Cross Country (GNCC) Series but he will return for Round 5.

Round 5: May 5 / Primm Casino Resort / Primm, Nevada
