Round 8 - WORCS - November 15, 2020
PRIMM, Nev. – It was a hard-fought battle of orange at Sunday’s penultimate round of the 2020 World Off-Road Championship Series (WORCS) with FMF/RPM/KTM Racing Team Maxxis’ Dante Oliveira ultimately edging out FMF KTM Factory Racing Team’s Taylor Robert for the overall win after trading off the race-lead throughout the day. Robert’s runner-up finish places him just one-point shy of wrapping up his second-straight Pro (MC) Championship with one round remaining in the series.

On Sunday, the premier motorcycle classes took to the track earlier in the morning making for slightly cooler temperatures and better visibility due to the lack of dust early on. The Primm course also showcased a “pro only” section featuring a very technical rock downhill and a rock uphill with a turn back down into the rocks, which added an extra element of difficulty throughout the race. Off the start, Robert powered his KTM 450 XC-F into second and he made his way into the lead before the end of the opening lap. With Oliveira close in tow, Robert put on an early charge to maintain the lead position for the first six laps. However, Oliveira was able to get past him on lap seven and shortly after, Robert made a mistake through the rock pile and went down hard. He ended up dropping to third as he took some time to get re-adjusted with both his bike and body. After getting settled in, Robert spent about three laps chasing and pressuring the second-place rider of Zach Bell and he eventually made his move on lap 10. With two laps to go, he attempted to close the gap on Oliveira but he was already too far ahead, leaving defending champion to settle for second on the day.

Robert: “I was riding the rock pile really well all day and that one lap I dropped my front wheel in a hole and it just ejected me over the front and it kind of rocked me a little bit. It scraped up my chin and shoulder and the bike was a little bent up so it took me about a lap to get going again. I started doing the rocks really well, which allowed me to get back by Zach but I didn’t have enough in me to catch back up to Dante. I’m a little bummed on the fact because I could have wrapped up the championship today but I’m one-point shy right now. So, now we’ll go to Havasu and try to win because that’s always the goal.”

With his second overall-win in 2020, Oliveira holds a steady second-place position in the Pro (MC) Championship where he has proven to be Robert’s most consistent opponent this season.

FMF/RPM/KTM Racing Team Maxxis rider Mateo Oliveira secured his fifth win of the season in the Pro 2 (MC) class, where he holds a favorable points lead heading into the final round. In the Pro 2 Lites division, KTM-mounted rider Will Riordan finished on the podium with a consistent third-place performance on Sunday. KTM-Supported rider Brandy Richards finished seventh in the Pro 2 Lites class, in addition to wrapping up the Women’s Pro Championship with another convincing win to extend her perfect streak in the class this season.
