Hitachi Construction Machinery Revo KTM UK’s Shaun Simpson retained his Maxxis ACU British Motocross Championship MX1 title on Sunday at round seven of the series at Preston Docks in Lancashire.

Riding a 2016 factory 450 SX-F, the 27-year-old’s successful defence was sealed in the opening race when he streaked to a commanding 22-second win. The sandy surface perfectly suited the Scot’s skills and he backed this up with two more first-placed finishes to bring his 2015 total to a dominant 18 victories from 20 starts.

In the MX2 class Ben Watson narrowly missed out on a podium finish after a crash in the opening race got his day off to a bad start. The 18-year-old fought back on his 250 SX-F to 10th to limit the damage and then signed off with 3-2 finishes to end the event in fourth overall and retain his third place in the championship standings.

Also contesting the MX2 class, James Cottrell and James Dunn both had frustrating days but were keen to draw positives from the penultimate round of the championship.

Cottrell qualified well and after two tough motos he came home 10th in the final race. Dunn missed the points in the opener but scored in races two and three as he continued his comeback from injury.

The team’s MXY2 rider Oli Benton was also in action and he recorded a season’s best finish aboard his 250 SX-F. The 18-year-old carded 2-4-4 for third overall in the youth class with his points haul lifting him from 15th to seventh in the championship.

Shaun Simpson MX1 - 1-1-1
“It’s been a season to remember, definitely. We’ve been trying really hard this year – a lot of work went into the off-season developing the 2015 bike and that sort of led into the factory support these last few weeks.

“It was important for me today to tie up the championship. The wins were nice but the overall was the main goal purely because I want to try and do an unbeaten season. It’s been great. We’ve been trying hard. I push every lap of every moto and I feel like I’m getting the rewards for it.”

Ben Watson MX2 - 10-3-2
“The first race I had a crash on the start with a few people which put me right at the back. The track was so fast it took me too long to get through the pack but I got up to 10th which wasn’t too bad. The second race I had a better start and worked my way through to third and in the final race I started well and got up to second pretty quickly. I’m really happy with that because the only man who beat me is probably the fastest rider in the world at the moment.”

James Cottrell MX2 - 16-31-10
“We’ve made some improvements on the bike and the Multitek engine and mapping is really, really good and that was almost a problem because I was getting mega gates and as soon as I was hooking third it was almost throwing me off the back. In the last one I managed to keep it down and came from about 13th up to 10th. I was a bit gutted the two guys up ahead beat me because I was going faster than them but I was happy with the last one but I need to put three together to get a good overall.”

James Dunn MX2 - 29-20-20
“I’ve struggled today. I’ve been working really hard to get back to where I should be at British and European championship level and it’s not working out at the moment. Preston hasn’t been good for me – three bad starts and three bad finishes – but I’m going to try and take some positives away. I’ve finished three motos and I’ll work even harder for the final round and hopefully get some good results.”

Oli Benton MXY2 - 2-4-4
“A few people have had mixed results but today I’ve finally been consistent. I started off well with a second and then had a couple of fourths so I’m really chuffed with that. I’ve been struggling with a bit of bad luck but I’m on the podium so it’s a great result for the team and myself.”
