12th Rd. Supercross 2016 – Santa Clara, CA (USA)
Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Ryan Dungey captured his sixth victory of the season on Saturday at round twelve of the AMA 450SX Championship in Santa Clara, California. Dungey’s win also served as his 28th career victory in the 450SX Class, where he now sits tied for 6th place in the all-time record book.
Ryan Dungey qualified third overall in the morning’s combined qualifying sessions, while his teammate,
Marvin Musquin, experienced a hard crash during the final session. As a result of his crash, Musquin was forced to miss the final minutes of the session, where he ultimately qualified in 13th position.
Both Dungey and Musquin lined up in 450SX Heat 2 and the Red Bull KTM duo shot off the line to capture 1-2 positions in the holeshot. Dungey assumed the early lead, with Musquin and James Stewart close in tow. Dungey held on for all six laps to capture the heat race win, followed by James Stewart in 2nd and Musquin in 3rd.
Main EventIn the 450SX Main Event, both Dungey and Musquin got off to a great start as they entered the opening lap inside the top three on their
KTM 450 SX-F FACTORY EDITION's. Dungey quickly made his way around Jason Anderson to take over the lead position while Ken Roczen settled in close behind. From there, it was an all-out battle for the lead between Dungey and Roczen, as both riders pushed the limit for the full 20-lap Main Event.
In the end, Dungey prevailed to capture his 28th career victory in the 450SX Class, while gaining valuable points in the championship chase. Dungey now holds a 42-point lead over Roczen with five rounds remaining in the season.
“It feels great to be back in the center of the podium,” Dungey stated.
“I got a good start and just tried to put the hammer down. Kenny (Roczen) was right there the whole night but we just tried to ride mistake-free and it went well.”Musquin ultimately finished 17th in the Main Event, following a crash during the day’s final qualifying session. Musquin now sits in 5th place in the 450SX Championship standings.
Troy Lee Designs Red Bull KTM’s Oldenburg finishes fifth in second Bay Area raceMitchell Oldenburg and the Western Regional 250SX riders returned to action at Levi’s Stadium, the site of Super Bowl 50 just a couple of short months ago, following an enjoyable six-week break. The Troy Lee Designs Red Bull KTM rider didn’t show any signs of cobwebs as he scored a top five finish in the Main Event.
Oldenburg started the day qualifying ninth for the evening program. He had a solid heat race where he finished sixth, putting him in good position for the Main Event.
Oldenburg got a decent start in the Main Event on his
KTM 250 SX-F FACTORY EDITION but came around the first lap outside the top 10. He went to work over the course of the 15-lap race, eventually working his way to an impressive fifth-place finish.
“It’s a little strange coming back for one race after so long away from racing, but we made it work and came away with a good result,” said
Oldenburg.
“I’m looking forward to focusing on some outdoor riding and then coming back strong in (Las) Vegas.” After getting this race in, the Western Regional riders will be on break until the final round of the season in at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas. The Eastern Regional 250SX class will pick back up next weekend for its fifth round in Indianapolis.
