11th Rd. Moto3 2016 – Automotodrom Brno (CZE)
Red Bull KTM Ajo’s Brad Binder, the Moto3 championship leader fell victim to a very wet circuit on Sunday, crashing out of the Czech Grand Prix on the Brno circuit in the 15th of 19 laps. Scotsman John McPhee took the win from Jorge Martin of Spain and Italian Fabio di Giannantonio.
Brad Binder, a clear favorite after a decisive qualifying for pole position, slid out after a rare mistake on a treacherous wet track while drawing away at the front of the pack to register his first DNF of the season. The South African had looked confident throughout and started to consolidate his lead from the seventh lap. The wet track claimed no less than nine riders, including hot favorite, the young Malaysian Khairul Idham Pawi, the standout winner of the only other two wet races this season.
Binder:
“There’s not much to say. Until the crash I had no fear and everything was going perfectly. I cannot be more grateful to the team, because my bike was more than perfect. I have never had such a good feeling in the rain in my life. I turned in a little too much for the corner and I think there was a small puddle there, so it was a bit unfortunate. I’m sorry for the team because today I maybe should not have done what I was doing. I would have been able to secure the points, but I was not forcing things to go fast –it was simply that I felt very comfortable and did not have the feeling that I was doing anything crazy. The positive thing from today is that I only lost six points from my lead in the World Championship.”Despite the DNF, Binder leaves the Czech circuit after only sacrificing six points in the Moto3 championship and still has a 61-point lead. Jorge Navarro and Enea Bastianini are currently 2-3 in the standings.
Best KTM rider was Binder’s factory teammate
Bo Bendsneyder who moved up to seventh place in the closing laps as a slew of riders in front slid off the slippery circuit.
Joan Mir (ESP) and
Nicolo Bulega (ITA) put their
KTM RC250 GP's in position 8-9 as they crossed the line. Of the nine riders who fell victim to the soaked circuit, Binder and
Andrea Locatelli were the only two on KTM.
Bendsneyder:
“It was a great race. I always feel good in the rain, but this morning after the warmup I did not feel entirely comfortable and we made some positive changes to the setup. My strategy was to take the first corner on the outside, to try to overtake some riders. Gradually I gained confidence and was approaching the front group. I had two very good final laps, and on the last one I was able to improve a little whilst the others lost pace. Starting twenty-fourth, my goal was to score points, but I did not expect to be in the Top 10 so I’m happy.”
Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup Race 1Marc Garcia stole victory on the line from
Aleix Viu,
Ayumu Sasaki and
Raúl Fernández in a blanket photo finish in Brno. The 16-year-old Spaniard was third into the last left/right as Sasaki passed Viu for the lead but had the perfect drive from his KTM RC250 RB through the right-hander to the line while Viu repassed Sasaki, and Fernandez so narrowly missed the podium.
“Anyone could have won it. But I did it and I’m so happy. It was a great fight all the way at the front, the other guys were very fast, there was just no chance to break away in front, I tried early on but it was impossible. There was no plan for the last lap, impossible with such a group and I just gave it everything and got myself in the right position at the last corner, so great to get across the line first and so good for the championship,” enthused
Garcia who still lies fourth but is now just 46 adrift of first with 100 points on offer for the remaining four races.
UPDATE: Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup Race 2Garcia has thrown himself at the championship chase with a fabulous Brno double while Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup points leader Sasaki kept his challenge rolling with third behind fellow title hopeful Fernández. Viu hung on to second place in the points table but suffered most after 12 laps in the Czech Republic crossing the line seventh.
“I felt good from the start,” Garcia explained.
“I have a great feeling with the bike and I just wanted to push as hard as I could to get away. I got a good rhythm and wanted to open up a good gap while the tyres were still working well. By half distance they were sliding around a lot but I knew what they were doing and I had a good lead so it wasn’t a problem. It has closed up the points a bit. There is still a gap but I love Misano and Aragon so I can’t wait to get into the last three races,” concluded the Catalan who is still fourth in the title chase but just 37 off Sasaki after winning three of the last four races.
