DESCHAMBAULT, QC – The KTM Canada Red Bull THOR Race Team headed east for a double-header at MX Deschambault, serving as Rounds 6 and 7 of the 2021 Triple Crown Series MX Tour. Jess Pettis had a blazing start to the race weekend, securing first overall in the 450 Pro class on Sunday, while Cole Thompson claimed sixth overall with a consistent performance. On Monday, Thompson charged to a fourth overall, but Pettis suffered a crash that ultimately ended his day early.
ROUND 6
The stacked race weekend commenced on Sunday with both Thompson and Pettis quick to jump up front aboard their KTM 450 SX-F FACTORY EDITION machines, battling for the lead early in Moto 1. Pettis eventually made a pass for second halfway into the race and from there he made a charge towards the leader but a late-race mistake cost him a position, finishing third. With a second-place start, Thompson found himself outside the top-five on lap two and he fought hard to ultimately finish sixth.
In Moto 2, it was Pettis who raced in a league of his own as he led all 14 laps from start to finish. Minimizing mistakes and charging hard, he claimed victory by more than 22 seconds to secure first in the moto and first overall for the day.
Thompson got off to a fourth place start and battled up to second before ultimately settling into a top-five spot later in the race. With 6-5 combined scores, he came away with sixth overall on day one.
ROUND 7
The KTM Canada Red Bull THOR Race Team lined up for day two of racing on Monday, with a one-moto format for the seventh round. Pettis had another great holeshot, leading the first four laps of the race before getting passed into second. In that same lap, Pettis landed sideways on a table-top and went down hard, unfortunately ending his day early. Pettis made a trip to the hospital for X-Rays and MRI, where he still awaits the official results.
Thompson, who started just inside the top-five, worked his way into third on lap five and aggressively battled inside a podium position for most of the race. He got passed with two laps to go and ultimately finished fourth on the day.
Cole Thompson, KTM Canada Red Bull THOR Race Team 450 Rider: “I wasn’t riding my best this weekend. I felt better each moto but wasn’t able to put it all together. I feel frustrated with myself, and I need to improve my game. I’m incredibly thankful for my team sticking with me through these tough races and hopefully I can get things turned around for the final round at Walton.”
Jess Pettis, KTM Canada Red Bull THOR Race Team 450 Rider: “Going into round 6 & 7 at Deschambault I was looking forward to keeping the momentum, coming off the win at San Del Lee. I got an okay start in the first moto on Sunday but made some small mistakes and could not find the flow. I felt frustrated after the first moto but rebounded with the holeshot in the second moto and checked out, finishing with a 24 second lead and a 3rd overall win this season. Heading into round 7 I had the red plate but unfortunately had a hard crash over a fast tabletop which resulted in an ambulance ride to the hospital.”
Jean-Sebastien Roy, KTM Canada Red Bull THOR Race Team Manager: “Sunday was a great day for the team with Jess going 3-1 for first overall and Cole taking sixth overall. Monday, unfortunately, came short for Jess after a great start, he landed sideways on a table-top and got ejected from the bike. He was taken to the hospital, and we are just waiting on the official MRI and X-Ray results and hoping for the best. Cole rode very aggressively for the whole moto and finished fourth, which is solid. We are looking forward to finishing strong in the final weekend at Walton in two weeks.”
WMX Class – KTM riders swept the THOR WMX podium once again on Sunday with KTM Supported racer Eve Brodeur topping the charts with a 1-1 performance. KTM rider Sarah-Kim Villeneuve secured second overall with 2-2 finishes and Malia Garant rounded out the podium with 3-3 finishes aboard her KTM.
Orange Brigade – KTM Orange Brigade rider Jacob Piccolo had a strong start to the weekend, claiming the 250 Pro class overall with 2-1 finishes on Sunday. He followed it up with a holeshot in Monday’s race, where he led the first five laps before running over a post on the track, which resulted in a broken rear brake pedal. Piccolo dug deep and managed the remainder of the moto without rear brakes, salvaging an impressive sixth place in the moto. giving him a three-point lead in the championship standings heading into the final round of the series.
