KTM RED BULL THOR FACTORY RACE TEAM MEMBERS THOMPSON, WARD AND PETTIS FINISH STRONG IN MINNEDOSA DESPITE WEATHER AND TRACK CONDITIONS
Chambly, QC – Mother Nature was not on our side this weekend in Minnedosa, Manitoba at McNabb Valley MX. After a hot dry week, the sky opened up on Friday night and the rain persisted for many hours. At the begining of the day, during practice and qualifications, the track conditions were fairly good. Thompson clocked the fastest lap in qualifications. He is a strong rider in these unfavorable conditions.
The rain started coming down harder after qualifications and made the track almost unrideable for Moto 1. In the MX2 class, Jess Pettis got the holeshot and led for one lap before before tipping over in a corner. He kept pushing and finished the race in 6th.
Jess Pettis - KTM Red Bull Thor Factory Race Team 250 Rider: "RD3 in Minnedosa was a wild one. It ended up raining a lot and becoming a mud race. I had my struggles in the first Moto and crashed 3 times and had to make a goggle stop but came back to 6th place. Second moto was cancelled, but I will take it and move on to the East. The month break will be nice to rest my arm and come into Gopher Dunes healthy and feeling 100%."
Tanner Ward was very close to Pettis off the start but went a bit too wide in corner one which cost him some time. He was not far from Jess during the Moto, but also got stuck in the mud and finished 5th.
Tanner Ward - KTM Red Bull Thor Factory Race Team 250 Rider: "Today was a crazy day, track conditions were super muddy and it was nerve racking heading into the first moto. Luckily I got a pretty decent start and ended up 5th. I am happy with how I rode and happy I stayed on the bike for the most part. I was bummed by their decision to cancel Moto 2 but already looking forward to my hometown race at Gopher Dunes.
In Moto 1 of the MX1 class, Cole Thompson got the holeshot and had a huge lead in the first lap. Unfortunately it was not long before he had a crash in a deep rut. He got back to 4th right away and was putting the pressure on 3rd place before he ad another tip over and got his bike stuck in deep, sticky mud. It took him about four minutes to get his bike unstuck, at which point he was outside of the top 20. He did not stop charging and crossed the checkered flag in 11th place.
Racing was over after Moto 1 of the MX1 class. The track conditions got so bad that the organization decided to call it a day. They also cancelled Sunday's Provincial race so we unfortunately did not get the chance to watch Orange Brigade rider Ryder McNabb race at his home track.
In the WMX class, the organization also decided to run a one Moto format because of the weather. The top five riders in this class were on KTMs with Orange Bleeder Eve Brodeur on top of the podium. She was followed by Shelby Turner and Avrie Berry. RD3 in Manitoba marks the end of the WMX West series. The next race at Gopher Dunes will be the start of the East series.
On behalf of everyone here at KTM Canada, we want to extend a big congratulations to all KTM riders mentioned for their impressive performances in these challenging conditions.
The MX series will continue on July 13th at Gopher Dunes for round 4 of the 8 round series.
