OTTAWA, ON – KTM Canada – Red Bull – THOR Race Team’s Sebastien Racine put in a strong performance to capture his second podium finish of the season at his hometown race at Sand Del Lee. The 250 Pro rookie was well on his way to earning a career-first win in Moto 2 before getting tangled with another rider just before the checkers. With a salvaging finish, Racine was still able to claim an impressive third in the moto and third overall at Round 6 of the 2022 Triple Crown Series.
Racine placed his KTM 250 SX-F just outside the top-five at the start of Moto 1 and he clicked off laps at an impressive pace, working his way into third early on. He held third for most of the race, before dropping back to fourth, where he ultimately finished. In Moto 2, Racine blasted off to a third-place start and quickly became engaged in a battle for second – making the pass, losing the spot and then regaining it within a matter of three laps. With his sights set on his teammate out front, Racine assumed the lead when Piccolo went down and he held strong into the final lap, looking to claim his first pro win in the moto. However, Racine got caught up with a downed rider just before the checkers and he did his best to quickly remount and cross the line in third. Tying his best overall-finish of the season, his powerful moto performances landed him a podium finish at third overall on the day and bumps him into fifth in the points standings.
Sebastien Racine, KTM Canada – Red Bull – THOR Race Team 250 Rider: “In Moto 1, I got a fifth-place start and made my way up to third pretty fast. I maybe rode a little too easy and Mitchell made his way around me, so I got fourth. In Moto 2, I got off to a good start in second and then Jacob crashed, so I led the rest of the moto until the white flag. Probably about 10 feet until the checkered flag, a lapper crashed ahead of me and I ran into him and went down. Really tough bummer, I was so close to getting my first pro race-win but we'll get it again another time. I’m pretty happy about that second podium, but we'll put even more work in this week and come back swinging for next weekend.”
Despite a strong start to the day, it was a fighting finish for defending champion Jacob Piccolo. In the first moto, Piccolo immediately put himself in podium contention, overtaking the lead three laps into the race. Facing pressure from his competitor, Piccolo slipped to second just before the halfway point and he rigorously tried to regain the spot but the leader had stretched the distance too far and he settled for second at the line. In the second moto, Piccolo once again got off to an exceptional start in second and he swapped spots with his teammate for third before moving into the lead on lap three. He held onto the lead for the next few laps until a big crash sent him all the way back to 19th. Banged up and bruised, Piccolo did his best to make up spots to 14th, where he ultimately finished. With 2-14 results, Piccolo salvaged fifth overall on the day.
Jacob Piccolo, KTM Canada – Red Bull – THOR Race Team 250 Rider: “It certainly was another rough weekend for me. I started off the day decently with a second in Moto 1 and was leading Moto 2 with a nice gap and had a pretty big get-off. I’m pretty sore right now but I am ready to redeem myself in River Glade.”
Team rider Jess Pettis remains out on injury since Round 2.
