KTM AND DUFFY TAKE POSITIVES FROM MAITLAND ROUND OF PROMX CHAMPIONSHIP

KTM Racing Team and premier class rookie Regan Duffy are taking the positives out of a mixed outing at the third round of the 2021 ProMX Championships at Maitland, NSW, on Sunday.
A fourth overall in the premier MX1 class wasn’t enough to hold onto the MX1 championship points-lead, despite two top-five finishes around a technical, hard-pack track.

After posting the sixth-fastest time in qualifying, the 18-year-old started inside the top 10 in the opening race, before he and his KTM 450 SX-F were embroiled in an intense race-long battle with several other title contenders on his way to fourth place.

Maitland saw the new back-to-back moto format for the second and third races of the day. Another fourth in part one looked to set the Western Australian in good stead for a podium result, but a bad start in part two saw him towards the back of the top 10.

Duffy was relentless as he worked his way to seventh position, which resulted in a combined fifth-place moto result when the Olympic scoring was taken into account. Those scores placed him just outside of the overall round podium in fourth position.

The highly-rated teenager is now just three points off the MX1 championship lead as the series is scheduled to travel to Wodonga, VIC, on 25 July.

Regan Duffy: "The track wasn’t ripped as deep a what I was expecting and in qualifying struggled to gel with the conditions. I didn’t get a great start in the opening race, but still worked my way up to fourth place from 10th, so I was pretty happy with that. In the first back-to-back race I got a good start, but had a small tip-over trying to make a move for third place and ended up in fourth. My start in the final race was pretty bad, but I came through for sixth and fourth overall on the day. I’m not stressed at all about losing the points lead. We’re only three points off the lead and my coach [Ross Beaton] has said I only need to be in front at the end of the last round, which is right! We’ll keep the training up, work hard and come back stronger in four weeks time.”
