The opening round of the 2026 Australian ProMX Championship saw KTM Racing Team riders Byron Dennis and Dylan Walsh deliver MX2 podium results at Wonthaggi, where Dennis achieved a well-earned second position overall and Walsh was directly behind in P3.
Dennis was impressive from the outset aboard his KTM 250 SX-F this weekend, setting the third-quickest qualifying time on Saturday afternoon and forming a solid foundation ahead of Sunday’s motos.

Clear skies made for perfect conditions in the Bass Coast region of Victoria, with Dennis claiming fourth in the opening MX2 moto – and recording the second-fastest lap-time of the race – before improving to second in Moto 2. His 4-2 scorecard earned him second overall for the season-opening round, validating the work that was completed throughout the off-season.

Byron Dennis: “We achieved solid results here at Round 1 of ProMX in Wonthaggi! I’m pretty happy to come away with second place overall – we worked really hard over the off-season, made a lot of improvements, and I’m really happy with where both myself and the bike are. This one feels good and I’m excited to keep pushing throughout the season ahead.”

Alongside him in MX2, Walsh was also in-form at Round 1, taking his KTM 250 SX-F to the top position on the qualifying timesheets via a 1:44.848s lap-time, before converting that to a third-place finish in Moto 1.

Another third-place result in Moto 2 to complete a consistent debut with KTM Racing Team outdoors earned him third overall for the weekend, and saw Walsh leave the season-opener with a solid haul of championship points entering Canberra’s second round on April 19.

Dylan Walsh: “It was good to end the weekend on the podium. I wanted more, but I missed the mark a bit on setup for the motos. We ride this track a lot, so I had an idea in my head about how the track was going to be, but it wasn’t that way at all. We’ll make some adjustments for the next one and come out swinging!”

MX1 recruit Zac Watson made his first ProMX appearance with the team onboard the KTM 450 SX-F at Wonthaggi, initially qualifying ninth on Saturday, before posting the sixth-fastest time during Sunday morning’s MX1 Pole Shootout.

Watson then scored 10th in Moto 1, before improving to a solid fifth position in Moto 2, and will take that momentum from the final race of the weekend into Canberra. As a result of his performance at Round 1, he is ranked eighth in the MX1 standings.

Zac Watson: “Wonthaggi wasn't too bad in the end! I had a big crash on Saturday morning, so I was a little bit sore, but I managed to get a good time in the Pole Shootout on Sunday. I had a slow start to Moto 1 – I got shuffled back a bit after Kyle Webster went down in the first turn – but I managed to get back to 10th. And then I got a much better start in Moto 2 and I was able to bring it home in fifth, which was a positive way to end my first weekend with the KTM Racing Team. At the end of the day, it ended up pretty solid for the opener and we'll build from here.”

Round 1 marked a more challenging outing for last year’s MX1 runner-up Nathan Crawford, who was eighth-fastest in regular qualifying on Saturday, before ranking 10th at the conclusion of the Shootout. The Queenslander raced to 9-18 results across the pair of premier class motos, positioning him 13th overall for the weekend on his KTM 450 SX-F.

Nathan Crawford: “It was just a hard day and it’s a bit unfortunate, but they are the cards that we were dealt this weekend. We have some work to do between now and Canberra to get back to where I know I can be – fighting up front – and that is what we are aiming to do together as a team.”

KTM Racing Team-supported Jackson Fuller also impressed at Wonthaggi to commence the ProMX season in MX3, racing his KTM 250 SX-F to 5-2 results on Sunday, which earned him third overall for the round.
