All eyes were on 18-year-old Cameron Durow this weekend when he took on a highly competitive field of South African Motocross stars to take the win in the MX2 Class. The youngster was recruited by Red Bull KTM at the start of the 2021 season and has wasted no time in proving that he has the pace to keep up with the frontrunners in this field.

This is the second time that Durow has experienced victory in the MX2 Class. In 2019, when the rider was 16 years old and competing in the High School Class, he also managed to snatch up an MX2 win.

Having endured four injuries since then, the rider has spent the past two years working on his motocross skills with the hope of repeating his past victory. After what was an unforgettable weekend of racing, we catch up with Durow about his experience racing for Red Bull KTM:

Describe the feeling of winning MX2 after more than two years of working towards this goal.

It felt incredible to get the win. I’ve been working really hard to get myself back on the top step of the podium. I suffered four major injuries in a row since 2019 and have spent so much time trying to recover since then.

Having only recently signed with Red Bull KTM, did you expect to be a frontrunner in your class so soon?

Yes, I went into this season with the expectation that I’d push the pace up front. In 2019, I was the first person to achieve an overall win in the 125cc Class and MX2 on the same day. But two weeks after that achievement I broke my shoulder - so my goal going into this year was to be up front again.

Have you ever been nervous to take on such a competitive field at such a young age?

I was 16 years old when I first started competing in MX2 and I never felt intimidated because I knew I had what it takes, even if I was younger than everyone else. But after I suffered all my injuries, my confidence was at a low and it was very difficult to work my way back to the top of such a competitive class. I never gave up and kept my head up. I have always tried to have a calm mindset, so I just decided to get through everything I was facing one day at a time.

When I signed with Red Bull KTM this year it gave me the huge confidence boost I needed during the off season to be back at the top of my game in 2021!

What are your goals for the rest of the season?

My goal for the rest of the season is to ultimately win the MX2 title. There are still four rounds left and a lot can happen between now and the end of the season. No matter what happens, I won’t lose sight of what I am aiming for.

My long-term goals for motocross is to race and bring home the championship in both the MX1 and MX2 class for Red Bull KTM, as well as hopefully get the opportunity to represent my country in the MX Of Nations.
