The familiar orange and blue hues of Red Bull KTM dominated proceedings at the Welkom round of the National Motorcross Championship in what can be described as being almost belligerent. This, the penultimate round, was a test for the team to hang on and defend their red plates which indicate championship lead but the Red Bull KTM riders stepped up and not only defended but extended their respective leads in fine style.

Trey Cox came into round 5 after competing at the junior world championships in Finland still nursing a slight wrist injury. “My goal was to not give up any points in the overall lead of the SA Championship and I’m really happy to have gone 1-2 in the two motos for 2nd overall,” he said. “We have a six-week break before heading to Chestnut for the final round which will give my wrist a chance to heal to make sure I'm ready to wrap up the championship!" he commented contently.

Tristan Purdon also had a good outing at the fifth round riding his brand new 2023 KTM’s. “I Was hoping to gain some points in the MX2 championship fight, but ended up losing a few,” he said. “I gave it my all but that’s racing, this does not mean I’ll give up as anything can happen” he added. In his words MX1 was an average day to start off but finishing 2-1 after initially struggling with his setup showed his class. “I haven’t raced the new bikes but we made some good changes for the last moto and it worked brilliantly, I’m super happy to win another overall and add some more points in that championship and we look forward to the last round to try keep the overall streak going" Purdon said.

Team mate Cameron Durow had better luck saying: "This weekend in Welkom was a really good one for me on the new KTM 250 SXF, I managed to get both moto wins along with the overall for the day which is exactly what I wanted to do”. Durow struggled a bit with his new KTM 450 on the other hand saying: “I just wasn’t 100% comfortable and that came through with my riding, during moto 1 I threw away 2nd place on the last lap and finished 3rd while in moto 2 I didn’t capitalise on Tristan’s mid Moto tip over that resulted in a 3-2 for 3rd overall."

"Welkom went very well for me scoring maximum points towards my championship, I rode my own race and took my time and let the race come to me and everything worked out which left me with both motos wins on the day" Luke Grundy said.

Grant Frerichs from KTM was clearly a happy man saying "Fantastic day of racing for the team, we proved without a shadow of a doubt that our riders are the ones to beat and that the 2023 bikes performed phenomenally.” He went on to say: “we are so happy to showcase just how good the new bikes are while we maintained the red plate in all of our classes taking the championship fight to the last round in 6 weeks’ time!"
